Pasar Bandeng (Milkfish Market)
Toward the end of Ramadan, Gresik holds Pasar Bandeng: milkfish stalls pop up everywhere, and the bandeng kawak, old milkfish grown to giant size, are weighed against each other and auctioned. Local lore says it began with Sunan Giri’s students bringing milkfish home as gifts for the holidays. Since 2025 it has been listed as Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage.
